This includes macromolecules such as DNA, RNA and protein; also how the replication, transcription and translation operated. Students will also be exposed to the technique of biology molecule on how DNA is manipulated. Among the techniques used are modelling and simulation of plant growth, use of data from remote sensors and analysis of data by statistical means. This course emphasis on application of bioreactors in 3 main division which are, growth of microorganism, plant cell and animal cell. In the application of bioreactors for microorganism growth, it emphasis on the fundamental aspect of continuous culture and fed batch fermentation in production of microorganism. Students would be exposed to preliminary knowledge required for implementation, advantages and disadvantages between fed batch and continuous culture. This also includes the understanding of specific growth rate and growth associated product formation of desired microorganism cultivation. On the application of bioreactors in propagation of plant cells it includes understanding of cell formation and growth in liquid suspension and scale up to bioreactor. Fundamental aspect of factors determining growth of plant cells in the bioreactor such as inoculum size and KLa would be exposed. Students would be introduced to monolayer culture system and suspension culture system for animal cell growth and bioreactor system suitable for plant cell growth. Introduction also covers on the potential of animal cell in the medicinal field and gene theraphy along with the importance of mass production using bioreactor. Kursus ini membincangkan aplikasi bioreaktor terhadap 3 bahagian terpenting iaitu pertumbuhan mikroorganisma, sel tumbuhan dan sel haiwan. Di dalam aplikasi bioreaktor dan pertumbuhan mikroorganisma, ia akan membincangkan aspek fundamental berkaitan continous culture dan fermentasi fed batch di dalam produksi mikroorganisma. Pelajar akan didedahkan kepada pengetahuan asas yang diperlukan untuk implementasi serta perbandingan antara fed batch dan continous culture. Kursus ini juga merangkumi kefahaman berkaitan pertumbuhan spesifik sel dan hubungan antara pertumbuhan mikrob dan pembentukan produk metabolit sekunder. Di dalam aplikasi bioreaktor untuk pertumbuhan sel tumbuhan pula ia merangkumi kefahaman berkaitan pembentukan dan pertumbuhan sel di dalam kultur cecair dan penskalaan kepada bioreaktor. Aspek fundamental berkaitan faktor yang mempengaruhi pertumbuhan sel tumbuhan di dalam bioreaktor seperti saiz inokulum dan KLa akan dibicangkan. Pelajar akan diperkenalkan kepada sistem kultur monolayer dan sistem kultur suspensi untuk pertumbuhan dan penggandaan sel haiwan serta sistem bioreaktor yang sesuai untuk penggandaan sel haiwan. Pengenalan terhadap sel haiwan juga akan turut merangkumi potensi kultur sel haiwan di dalam bidang perubatan dan terapi gen serta kepentingan bioreaktor di dalam penggandaan sel haiwan. |

This course explains the development of plant tissue culture, organization and laboratory practices and preparation required to carry out aseptic manipulations . In addition, this course also emphasizes on several important aspects of preparation of stocks and media, concept of totipotency ,juvenility gradient, somaclonal variation; types of cultures such as callus culture, somatic embryogenesis, anther and ovule cultures , meristem culture and protoplast culture. Topics such as genetic stability and transformation, experimental design and analysis of results will be discussed. Kursus ini menerangkan kemajuan kultura tisu tumbuhan serta organisasi dan keperluan makmal bagi menjalankan teknik aseptik. Di samping itu, kursus ini juga memberi penekanan kepada beberapa aspek penting seperti penyediakan stok dan media, koncep totipotensi, kultur kalus, embryogenesis somatik, organogenesis, kultura debunga dan ovul. Topik seperti kestabilan genetik dan variasi somaklon, rekabentuk eksperimen dan pengolahan keputusan juga dibincangkan. |

This course presents an introduction to bioinformatics, its principles and application in solving biological problems. The course emphasizes on use of appropriate bioinformatics software, the criteria of biological data that is applicable in bioinformatics analysis and the application of bioinformatics tools to laboratory based research. The course features hands on approach and the extensive use of programmes available over the World Wide Web to biologist. Students will be taught on how to access appropriate public databases and utilize correct search format. Syllabus would include the introduction to DNA, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. At the end of the course, students should be able to define and apply current bioinformatics techniques widely used in biology field (information retrieving involving sequence annotation, gene submission, multiple alignment, homology similarity search, secondary prediction and phylogenetic analysis. Kursus ini membincangkan tentang pengenalan kepada Bioinformatik, prinsip-prinsip dan aplikasi untuk menyelesaikan masalah-masalah dalam biologi. Kursus ini juga fokus kepada penggunaan perisian-perisian Bionformatik, kreteria data biologi bagi analisis bioinformatik dan aplikasi alatan bionformatik.untuk kajian di dalam makmal. Keistimewaan kursus ini adalah ia lebih mengutamakan dan mendedahkan ahli biologi kepada penggunaan program-program yang terdapat di internet secara intensif. Kursus ini menerangkan kemajuan kultura tisu tumbuhan secara komersial. Di samping itu, kursus ini juga memberi penekanan kepada beberapa aspek penting dalam proses "hardening" dan pemindahan tumbuhan mikro. Murid –murid akan di dedahkan kepada teknologi baru sistem “temporary immersion” dari Perancis. Kursus ini akan meningkatkan kemahiran manipulasi teknik aseptik dengan skala komersial apabila murid murid bekerja sendiri dan berkumpulan. |

The objective is to highlight the role of ethical considerations in food and agriculture, both in views of discussionn on GMO and in relation to food safety and the environment. Issues covered include intellectual property ownership of the necessary tools to produce GMOs, potential consequences of their use and undesirable effects that could result from their application, both now and in the future.

This course explains the history and advancement of animal cell and tissue culture.Organization and laboratory requirements for aseptic technique.The course also emphasize on preparation on media and different type of cell and tissue cultures. As example, suspension, and anchorage dependent cultures, preparation of primary culture and tissue and organ culture will be emphasized. Topics such as principle of large scale culture, generation of hybridoma cells and culture of hemopoietic stem cells will be discussed. Kursus ini menerangkan sejarah dan kemajuan kultura sel dan tisu haiwan. Organisasi dan keperluan makmal bagi menjalankan teknik aseptik. Penekanan kepada penyediaan media dan perbagai teknik pengkulturan sel dan tisu haiwan akan diberi. This course discusses the manipulation and analysis of plant genome. The use of molecular biology techniques in plant breeding will also be described. This course will also include plant transformation techniques, construction of expression cassette, markers-assisted breeding, analysis of multigenic traits, gene microarray technology, RNAi and immunocytochemistry techniques. Various issues on genetically modified products will also be discussed. Kursus ini membincangkan tentang manipulasi dan penganalisaan genom tumbuhan. Penggunaan pelbagai teknik-teknik biologi molekul dalam pembiakan baka tumbuhan akan dihuraikan. Kursus ini juga merangkumi: teknik transformasi tumbuhan pembinaan kaset penzahiran, kaedah pembiak-baik menggunakan penanda pembantu, analisa ciri multigenik, teknologi gen jujukan mikro, RNAi dan teknik immunokimia. This course discusses various aspects of fields of genetics particularly the relationship between genes and traits at the molecular, cellular, organismal and populational levels. This course also covers the principles of Mendel’s Law of inheritance and how probability calculations are used in genetic problems to predict the outcome of crosses. In addition, non-Mendel inheritance, variation in chromosome structure and number, reproduction and chromosome transmission, quantitative genetics, population genetics and evolutionary genetics are also included in this course. Kursus ini membincangkan beberapa aspek bidang genetik khususnya kaitan diantara gen dan sifat-sifat diperingkat molekul, sel, organisma dan populasi. Kursus ini juga mempelajari prinsip undand-undang pewarisan Mendel dan pengiraan probabiliti diguna untuk menentukan hasil setiap kacukan. The course will introduce the fundamental concepts of statistics and a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to prepare the students for performing statistical analysis. The topics include fundamental probability theory, T-Test, Chi-square Test, One Way Analysis of Variance, Correlation, Regression, and Non-Parametric Analyses. This course focuses on the applied rather than the theoretical aspects of statistics. Kursus ini memberi pendedahan kepada konsep asas statistik dan pelbagai teknik statistik deskriptif dan inferensi yang membolehkan pelajar mengaplikasi analisis statistik dan menggunakan perisian statistik. Topik kursus merangkumi teori asas kebarangkalian, Ujian T, Ujian Khi, Analisis Varians Sehala, Korelasi, Regresi dan Analisis Bukan Parametrik. Penekanan kursus ini lebih kepada pengaplikasian berbanding aspek teori statistik. |

This course involves practical industrial training for students at various places of interest to the faculty. These places include government institutions and private sector. Main objective is to expose students to working environment and develop soft skill in them. The students are exposed to management and research skills. Some of the government institutions and private sector are Malaysian Rubber Board, Malaysian Palm Oil Board, Malaysian Institute of Nuclear Technology, Land Schemes and Biotechnology Laboratories. In agriculture, the students are required to learn new technologies in food production and crops of economic interest. Kursus ini merangkumi latihan industri bagi penuntut dibeberapa tempat berkepentingan kepada fakulti seperti institusi kerajaan dan swasta. Objektif utama adalah untuk melatih penuntut kepada persekitaran kerja dan komunikasi. Penuntut juga di latih tentang pengurusan dan penyelidikan. Beberapa institusi kerajaan termasuk Lembaga Getah Malaysia, Lembaga Kelapa Sawit Malaysia, Institut Tenaga Nuklear, Rancangan Tanah Kerajaan dan Makmal Bioteknologi. Penuntut dikehendaki mempelajari teknologi terkini dalam pengeluaran makanan dan tanaman industri. |

This course is introduced to expose students to the background and extension definition relating to concepts, objectives, and the agriculture extension model. The course also addresses the extension strategies, the image of extension agent, understanding of theories and methods, and the planning process. Exposure to how extension can play an effective role in the dissemination of the farm practices information will also be discussed. At the end of the course the students are expected to know the real role of agriculture extension. Kursus ini akan mendedahkan pelajar kepada latar belakang dan definasi pengembangan termasuk konsep, objektif dan model pengembangan pertanian. Kursus ini juga mengambil kira strategi pengembangan; imej agen pengembangan; pemahaman teori; pemahaman kaedah; proses perancangan; dan penilaian program. Pendedahan bagaimana pengembangan boleh berperanan untuk menentukan maklumat amalan ladang dapat disalurkankan secara berkesan juga dibincangkan. Familiarize the students with a variety of social-psychological theories of attitude change and persuasion. Expose on various communication techniques, its’ characteristics and applications. This course provide an understanding on how to select appropriate communication techniques in relation to the audiences groups and situations. Students will deliver group oral presentation and method demonstration techniques. Pengenalan kepada teori, definisi dan model komunikasi perseorangan dan komunikasi massa, dan peranannya sebagai instrumen perubahan sikap dan pengaruh sosial dalam masyarakat dan pertanian. Pelajar didedahkan dengan pelbagai teori sosial-psikologi berkaitan perubahan sikap dan pengaruh sosial ke arah penerimaan perubahan. Pelbagai teknik komunikasi, ciri dan penggunaanya turut diperkenalkan. Kursus ini juga memberi pemahaman mengenai cara pemilihan teknik komunikasi bersesuaian dengan kumpulan penerima dan situasi. Secara berkumpulan, pelajar akan membuat pembentangan secara lisan dan mengaplikasikan teknik demonstrasi. |
